We are bringing a read-a-thon fundraiser to Jefferson school. Whooo’s Reading is a web based platform that provides kids with a fun way to log their reading time, parents with an easy way to collect sponsorship pledges, and teachers with a way to incorporate reading into class activities. All while raising money for our school!

Fifth Grade Yearbook - Photos Needed

5th Grade Families - we need photos for the yearbook. The Yearbook Committee is in search of photos of your child. In addition to baby pics, we are looking for snapshots of your child enjoying class activities, events, fields trips, art show....all the great memories from Jefferson. Submit your child’s photos by March 5th and help us make this year’s book great. Big smiles and lots of action - we need your best photos of your kids!

SPED PTO Meeting: 2/27

Our next meeting's featured topic is the Special Education Experience: Secondary Grades. Hear from our seasoned school liaisons, SPED PTO executive board members and SEPAC leadership about their personal experiences and share your own with others who can relate and have similar questions and concerns. District guest likely to attend. Meeting will also include an update by SEPAC on their recent advocacy efforts on behalf of the Special Education community.

Join us on March 17-18 for the 2018 SOMA Film Festival Kids' Program where we will be featuring short films that kids (ages 4-10) will enjoy. Start With Hello Week: 2/5 - 2/9

During the week of Feb 5th, the Jefferson community will be participating in the nationally recognized Start with Hello Week to bring awareness around the importance of celebrating kindness and inclusion with a simple ‘hello’. The non-profit organization, Sandy Hook Promise, began this initiative as one of their outreach opportunities to spread awareness around the power of reaching out to others, particularly to those who look alone. In addition to our themed days, Jefferson is excited to welcome seniors from our community to facilitate fun enrichment workshops during recess as we bring awareness to celebrate Start with Hello.

Stand Up Girls

Join us for the next season of Stand Up Girls. SUG is a local SOMA organization that teaches girls grades 2-6 how to stand up for themselves (public speaking and self-esteem), stand up for others (diversity celebration, anti-bullying) and stand up as leaders in their community! More than a hundred SOMA families have benefited from this program since its inception a few years ago. Run by a Marshall mom and South Mountain mom, we have girls from all over our district participating, and welcome all girls and families to join us.

Girls Leadership Workshop

For those that expressed interest in the Girls Leadership Workshops, the registration links are now live. Scholarships are available. This workshop is geared for Kindergartener to Third Grader girls and their grown up to teach social emotional intelligence, explore and communicate feelings and teach how to make healthy relationship choices.

Achieve Direct Grant Funding

Thanks to the SOMA community, the Achieve Foundation has awarded more than $64,000 to teachers in our district for grants to pay for classroom projects this past spring and beyond! Congratulations to Jefferson teacher Alyssa Olsen who was awarded a fully funded grant to have yoga brought into the classroom. You can now help support the STEM project of Jefferson’s Christine Stewart through Achieve’s Direct Grant Funding campaign. All donations are tax deductible and ultimately benefit all our kids.

For South Orange and Maplewood parents with an interest in the Wait Until 8th movement, check out this forum on Facebook which discusses screen time for kids and specifically the idea of waiting until 8th grade to get your kid a smartphone. Members may or may not plan to wait until 8th grade, but they're interested in discussing issues of screen time, kids and technology, and related parenting challenges.
