Start With Hello Week: 2/5 - 2/9
2/4/2018 11:13 pm
During the week of February 5th- 9th our Jefferson community will be participating in the nationally recognized; Start with Hello Week to bring awareness around the importance of celebrating kindness and inclusion with a simple ‘hello’. The non-profit organization, Sandy Hook Promise, began this initiative as one of their outreach opportunities to spread awareness around the power of reaching out to others, particularly to those who look alone. Sandy Hook Promise has focused their efforts around preventing social isolation before bullying or violence happens through proactive school-wide initiatives, encouraging schools to have better security, and lobbying for safer gun laws in Washington.
The week Start with Hello is an opportunity for us at Jefferson School to bring awareness and conversation around the importance of creating a sustainable, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment. More importantly, it allows us all to be mindful of the impact a simple hello or invitation to play can make, particularly to someone looking left out or lonely. We encourage you to take a look at the parent pamphlet created by Sandy Hook Promise to continue conversations at home around this week. In addition to our themed days below, Jefferson is excited to welcome seniors from our community to facilitate fun enrichment workshops during recess as we bring awareness and celebrate Start with Hello Week.
Monday 5th: Start with Hello Kick Off
Mrs. Alleman will begin with a morning assembly introducing the importance and message behind this important week. Students will also be reminded to participate in the poster contest, which invites our students to make creative, inclusive messages to promoting kindness and acceptance. Two winners from each grade will earn a school store gift card! Posters will be due for submission in the main office on Monday, February 26th.
Tuesday 6th: Wear Green Day: promote awareness and call attention to Sandy Hook Promise’s Start with Hello Week.
Wednesday 7th: Sign the Pledge Day! Students in their classrooms will read and reflect on the SWH pledge that they will hang in their classroom as a daily visual reminder for the importance to be mindful to practice these simple three steps.
Thursday 8th: Start with Hello Day: Students and staff will wear name tags as a means to ‘Start with Hello’ by greeting each other by name.
Friday 9th: National No one Eats Alone Day & Say Hello! Students will mix it up by sitting with someone new.
