 Owls are reading a lot

Why participate in the Read-a-thon?
Last year Jefferson’s Read-a-Thon fundraiser was successful in raising over $16,000, which went to support our staff and students' basic needs in the unprecedented year as well as continue to provide programs and opportunities for all students.

We are excited that this year our FUNdraiser will run alongside the BATTLE OF THE BOOKS and funds raised will go to the

Jefferson school LIBRARY!!!

See how we are doing: Jefferson Readathon!

What is the Read-a-Thon?

The read-a-thon raises money for our school while helping all the children improve their reading skills. Students and teachers choose what they want to read from comics to classics. They ask friends and family to sponsor them per book or per minute of reading. Sponsors can pay online, so you won’t need to collect any money in person.

What is Readafun?

For Jefferson School's Read-a-thon, we are using Readafun, a web-based platform (this used to be called Whooosreading).

Readafun promotes skills that students actually need in life: independent thinking and communication. Students think independently with open-ended quiz questions for any book… instead of filling in A, B, C, or D.

It also provides a fun way for children to log the minutes they read, provides parents with a convenient way to collect sponsorship pledges, and provides teachers with a route to incorporate the Read-a-thon into class activities if they wish.  Students will be able to log minutes at school using their Chromebooks as well as at home.

As students earn points for minutes read, they’re able to dress-up an Owl Avatar and can encourage friends by posting comments. Teachers will also have the opportunity to log on and see how the class is doing, and may also post comments. All reading counts, including audio books and books someone reads to you!

Note that the system is set up for the school only, and nobody outside of the Jefferson community will have access to the Read-a-thon set-up. Participation is, of course, optional.

When is the Readafun?

This year's Read-a-Thon which will run Monday, January 31 through Friday, February 25. Make sure your child's reading minutes are logged as prizes will be determined on minutes logged through those dates. Any minutes logged outside of the official dates will not count toward individual or class participation/prizes.

Individual & Class Prizes

Top readers will be announced weekly during school-wide morning announcements! Readers with the most books overall (from each grade) will receive a Words Bookstore gift certificate. Classes with the most participation (for each grade) will receive a Words Bookstore gift certificate for their classroom with a special extra prize for the class with the most participation. Readers with the most books read each week (for each grade) will be invited to a surprise activity with Mr. Rivera.

How does it work?

You will receive an email with instructions about how to authorize and log in to your child’s account at https://www.readafun.com how to invite sponsors, and how to log minutes read. You can also see instructions to set up the account here. You can also watch this account set-up video  that shows you how it works.

Log-in information (including IDs) will be sent at the end of January! Don’t have your ID? Please contact the readathon team at readathon@Jefferson-pta.org.

A couple of quick tips:
1. Enter sponsors’ email addresses and Readafun will send them an invitation to participate. (Grandparents, Aunts, and Uncles love to get involved). More details on this in this video.
2. There is a link on your child's page to share a link on social media. It is always great to let your Facebook friends help-out.

Students will be able to log books and minutes read in school.
