Haiku for Third Graders

4/9/2018 4:10 pm

Greetings, Jefferson Elementary 3rd Grade Parents!

Caley Vickerman, founder of the Public Art/Poetry Project, the Guerilla Haiku Movement will be in residence the week of April 23rd with your 3rd Graders (April is Poetry Month) !

Guerilla Haiku uses the short-form poetry structure of haiku to engage neighbors in conversation and empower students to connect with themselves, each other, and their communities.   To fully engage in the process of Guerilla Haiku-ing, your students need your help!

The plan through the course of the week is to start with teaching your students the haiku structure and have them write about themselves, and their classes.  Then they will gather haiku at home about their families.

The next step is where you all come in!

On Wednesday April 25 and Thursday April 26, each class of 3rd graders will be divided into teams of 5-8.  Each team needs an adult "Team Leader" (additional available staff will be three "Team Leaders" and we will need 2-3 more volunteers per class to head up the small groups.) Each team will get a set of Haiku Challenges that they have 30 minutes to complete around campus.  These Haiku Challenges could be special places to write haiku, or special people to GET to write haiku.

Your job as "Team Leader" is to accompany your small group on their journey, take photos of their process (that you will send to Caley for the end-of-residency slide show), and make sure they get back to the classroom at the correct time so we can reflect on their experiences in the greater school community.  Click here to see classroom schedules.

All of the haiku gathered will be written on black paper with sidewalk chalk and added to an installation that starts in 3rd grade classrooms, will grow to take over the auditorium Friday morning and will be displayed at Maplewood Village on Friday afternoon, and South Orange Village on Saturday morning to share with the wider world.  In this way the 3rd Graders will build a web of our words celebrating myriad community voices.

Friday, 4/27 4-7pm
Maplewood Ricalton Square

Saturday, 4/28 11am-2pm
South Orange Village Gazebo

We look so forward to sharing this adventure with you, and hope you will be able to participate! Please email Laura Brenden at laurakbrenden@gmail.com if you have any availability to volunteer on 4/25 or 4/26, and THANK YOU!
